James King, principal consultant of King Petroleum Services joined the oil industry in 1980 serving a traditional engineering apprenticeship for an offshore construction company, before undertaking full-time education studying mechanical/electrical engineering and physics. A period was then spent with an international oil & gas service company working on well intervention and work-over operations. The late 80’s saw the start of a career lasting more than 12 years with Shell International, with extended roles in both the petroleum and well engineering functions, covering exploration, appraisal, development and work-over operations, through to supervisory level. Key project contributions included; horizontal multi-well ERD, ‘dipstick’ exploration, low-head/Under Balanced Drilling, and Smart well projects worldwide.

King Petroleum Services Ltd. was formed in February 2001 as an independent consultancy providing services to both major and independent oil and gas operators. The company has provided a range of subsurface development, petroleum engineering, well operations and drilling management services to various clients since the company formed. Specialist project management services have been provided on challenging HPHT field development and in-fill campaigns, depleted reservoir Coiled-Tubing Drilling and field abandonment campaigns for a major international oil company. Other client services include developing an exploration strategy for a Caribbean state oil company, developing well integrity strategy and policies for a Middle East national oil company, providing drilling management services (some 80 wells) for an independent operator in the Russian Federation, and numerous short-term consultancy services for well engineering and production technology functions.

James King is a Chartered Scientist, Chartered Physicist (with a Continuing Professional Development Award), is a Member of the Institute of Physics, and a Chartered Engineer. He holds a BSc. (Hons.) (physics/engineering), a Post-graduate Diploma and Certificate in Business Management, and a Diploma in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. He is the author of several papers, holds a MENSA Certificate of Merit, is a former Society of Petroleum Engineer’s section chairman, with an SPE outstanding leadership award, and is a former Trustee of the Shell Pension Fund.
